Biodiversity in new and existing construction projects

Supporting urban biodiversity

Measures that increase urban biodiversity also improve quality of life, usability of public and private spaces, and ultimately, the value of a property.

At the Wüest Partner Group, we offer targeted advice on promoting biodiversity and achieving comprehensive sustainability goals in urban areas – for both new and existing construction projects.

Our consulting services include developing strategies that integrate biodiversity into the built environment. These are aligned with global sustainability goals, especially SDG 15: Life on Land.

Protecting the environment and promoting biodiversity

The EU taxonomy aims to promote investment in sustainable activities, with the protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems as one of the six key environmental objectives (see the list below). This goal is closely linked to the other taxonomy objectives and underlines the importance of healthy ecosystems for a sustainable economy. While not mandatory in Switzerland, the EU taxonomy serves as a valuable guide, particularly for companies and financial institutions operating internationally or seeking to access the European markets.

  • The protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems is a cross-cutting priority that supports each of the taxonomy’s other objectives. Healthy ecosystems stabilize the climate, protect water resources, reduce pollution, and contribute to a resilient, resource-efficient economy. Companies and projects that pursue these goals not only generate ecological value but also meet the requirements for sustainable investors.
  • Climate change mitigation
  • Climate change adaptation
  • Sustainable use and protection of water and marine resources
  • Transition to a circular economy
  • Pollution prevention and control

Our services

Potential analyses and strategic portfolio alignment

We prepare asset-level potential analyses that identify how to increase biodiversity in new and existing projects. These insights form the basis for portfolio-level strategic alignment, which is documented through guidelines. This holistic, uniform approach enables clients to ensure that all projects align with biodiversity objectives while simultaneously meeting wider sustainability requirements.

Interdisciplinary workshops and implementation strategies

We coordinate interdisciplinary workshops that bring together planners, contractors, and designers to establish project-specific requirements and objectives. These are tailored to various physical components (open spaces, facades, rooftops, etc.) and are developed collaboratively with all parties. This cooperative approach makes it possible to define actionable strategies for implementing measures such as extensive and intensive green roofs, green facades, and the design of open spaces.

Optimization of biodiversity the urban climate

The planned measures to promote biodiversity not only serve ecological goals but also address important cross-cutting issues such as mitigating urban heat island effects, managing water retention during heavy rainfall events, and improving air quality. At the same time, these measures contribute to increasing the quality of life and attractiveness of urban areas by creating valuable green spaces and revitalizing them ecologically.

Integration with sustainability strategies and certifications

Through our comprehensive range of services, the Wüest Partner Group actively supports the integration of biodiversity measures into our clients’ overarching sustainability strategies. This also includes obtaining sustainability certifications and integrating socio-economic goals into project development, ensuring these measures can be implemented not only ecologically but also with economic viability and social relevance.
